Exploring the role of physical prototypes during co-creation activities at LEGO company using case study validation

Abstract: This study explores the application of physical prototypes to facilitate co-creation activities involving different stakeholders through a casestudy analysis. It investigates how physical prototypes support the work of LEGO team at PG2 Front End Design Department (PG2FEDD) in co-creation processes. Additionally, this study will enhance our understanding of how physical prototypes facilitate not only knowledge sharing but also anticipating future user needs. Moreover, the study illustrates how careful deliberat… Show more

“…Attribute findings of product appearance and utility developed at this stage can be further enhanced through co-creation that is designed as a research case into autism therapy. As practiced in research into design, the value creation aspect of the insight lies in identifying experiences that were otherwise unknown before (Isa & Liem, 2021). Incorporating co-creation as a means for validating findings strengthens the process of design research.…”

“…Co-Creation Spaces: The establishment of co-creation spaces acts as a catalyst for collective ideation and experimentation. LEGO's "LEGO Ideas" platform exemplifies this by engaging users in the process of suggesting and voting on ideas for new products, fostering a dynamic space for innovation (Isa & Liem, 2021).…”

“…Each design representation may offer unique benefits in the context of design communication. Prior work points to the benefits of physical prototypes in facilitating communication, as they allow for tactile engagements (Brandt 2007), are useful for obtaining feedback and spurring discussion (Isa & Liem 2021) and "sell" a design concept (Elverum & Welo 2014). However, compared to a sketch, a physical prototype can be more challenging to create due to the resources and effort involved in physical manufacture (Nelson & Menold 2020), even at low fidelities (Nolte & McComb 2020).…”
