In terms of the impact of human activity on the natural environment, civil engineering is one of the most significant productive pursuits. The production and use of building materials, the advancement of engineering and construction, the use of the project after it is completed, the removal of discarded components, and other procedures all require significant energy expenditure and ongoing waste generation, which can have severe consequences for the natural environment. To meet the demands of both economic and social development, advancements in civil engineering must be made while also protecting the natural world, limiting the use of natural resources, and promoting sustainable development. This study examines the long-term strategy in civil engineering and explores the role of environmental sustainability throughout the various stages of the civil design process, including the conceptual stage, the technical design stage, and the building stage. The research finds that the construction industry should adopt practices that adhere to sustainability principles such as environmentally-friendly design, durability, energy efficiency, waste reduction, improved indoor air quality, water conservation, and the use of sustainable building materials in construction.

Abstract:There is a variety of PDSs (project delivery systems) in today's construction industry. This leads to confusion when it comes to selecting the most suitable PDS for a specific project. The wrong selection decision might lead eventually to reduced profit margins or perhaps financial losses to PSFs (professional service firms). This research proposes a conceptual framework that helps PSFs in the selection of one or more suitable PDSs for their construction operations. The framework uses SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis as a tool for assessing each PDS considered in this research. The PDSs included in the framework are design-bid-build, design-build, construction management agency, public-private partnerships and integrated project delivery. The main aim of this research framework is to enhance decision-making efficiency in PDS selection for PSF operations.

Green Mark, a certification for Green Building (GB), has become a compulsory requirement for all new buildings in Singapore. The aim of this study is to explore the controllable critical project management factors of Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) firms for delivering Green Mark certified projects and examine how these factors can be useful. Based on three case projects in Singapore, the factors influencing the success of GB were identified. It was also observed that the higher ratings of the building projects, the more management factors should be given proper attention. The research findings could assist project managers in managing the overall project performance and successfully implementing Green Mark certified projects more effectively.
