Exploring UAE's transition towards circular economy through construction and demolition waste management in the pre-construction stage–A case study approach

Abstract: PurposeThis paper aims to explore UAE's transition towards circular economy (CE) through construction and demolition waste (CDW) management in the pre-construction stage. The extent of circularity is assessed by five key aspects of CE, such as policies and strategic frameworks, design for waste prevention, design for disassembly or deconstruction, use of prefabricated elements and CDW management plans.Design/methodology/approachMultiple case studies were conducted in the context of the Dubai construction indus… Show more

“…Case studies showcase examples of companies that have implemented innovative and successful chemical management initiatives to enhance worker safety, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance (Nie ,2023). These initiatives may include the adoption of alternative chemicals, implementation of engineering controls, development of stringent protocols, and integration of green chemistry principles into manufacturing processes.…”

“…According to Munaro and Tavares (2023) [74], these techniques must be combined with eco design, standardization, modularization, and prefabrication (ST7) methods, which rationalize the construction process, reducing waste generated at the stage. In addition to these, the design for manufacturing and assembly also makes construction more efficient, since in the case studies evaluated by Nie, Dahanayake, and Sumanarathna (2023) [75], the reduction was between 60% and 90% of the waste generated. 3D concrete printing was also mentioned as an option by the authors, an example being Dubai, which plans to build 25% of concrete components for construction with 3D printing by 2030, although the methodology still requires technological developments.…”

“…As a reflection on these, this issue of Smart and Sustainable Built Environment (SASBE) brought together ten papers CC, construction and demolition waste (CDW) management and sustainability in built environment. Nie et al (2024) explored the UAE's transition towards a CE through construction and CDW in the pre-construction stage. They selected three significant construction projects as case studies, conducting semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis.…”
