Exploring wind dynamics in space and time : mining frequent pattern and modelling power potential

Abstract

This thesis consists of six chapters including the introduction and the synthesis. Chapter 2 has been published as a book chapter while the remaining chapters have been published, or are submitted to, international peer-reviewed journals. The following paragraphs summarize the contents of each chapter. Chapter 1 provides the research background, lists the main research objectives and the research questions, and contains this PhD thesis outline. Chapter 2 presents our data mining approach to extract wind patterns from hourly wind speed and direction data and shows how two newly developed visualization tools, namely TileVis and the 3D wind rose, could be used to explore the mined patterns. Chapter 3 focuses on the mining of wind patterns without discretizing the temporal dimension into arbitrary temporal units
