The physical environment is of critical importance to child development. Understanding how exposure to domains of the physical environment such as greenspace, urbanicity, air pollution or noise affects externalising problems in typical and neurodiverse children is of particular importance given the significant long-term impact of those problems. In this narrative review we investigated the evidence for domains of the physical environment that may ameliorate or contribute to the display of externalising behaviours. We have considered a broad range of study designs that include typically developing and neurodiverse children and young people aged 0-18 years. We used the GRADE system to appraise the evidence. Searches were performed in 8 databases in July 2020 and updated in June 2022. Additional articles were further identified by hand-searching reference lists of included papers. The protocol for the review was preregistered with PROSPERO. Results: We retrieved 7174 studies of which 67 are included in this review. The studies reported on green space, environmental noise and music, air pollution, meteorological effects, spatial density, urban or rural setting, and home elements (e.g., damp/sensory aspects/colour). They all used well validated parent and child reported measures of externalising problems. Most of the studies were rated as having high or probably high risk of bias. Greenspace rurality and interior design had most evidence, although the certainty of the association was low. As expected, noise, air pollution, urbanicity, spatial density, colour and humidity appeared to increase the display of externalising behaviours. There was a dearth of studies on the role of the physical environment in neurodiverse children. The studies were heterogeneous and measured a range of externalising behaviours from symptoms to full syndromes. Greenspace exposure was the most common domain studied but certainty of evidence for the association between environmental exposures and externalising problems in the child or young person was low across all domains. We found a large knowledge gap in the literature concerning neurodiverse children, which suggests that future studies should focus on these children, who are also more likely to experience adverse early life experiences including living in more deprived environments as well as being highly vulnerable to the onset of mental ill health. Such research should also aim to dis-aggregate the mechanisms of action for both environmental influences on the externalising problems the results of which may point to pathways for public health interventions and policy development to address inequities that can be relevant to ill health in neurodiverse young people.

Here, we introduce Traffic Ear, an acoustic sensor pack that determines the engine noise of each passing vehicle without interrupting traffic flow. The device consists of an array of microphones combined with a computer vision camera. The class and speed of passing vehicles were estimated using sound wave analysis, image processing, and machine learning algorithms. We compared the traffic composition estimated with the Traffic Ear sensor with that recorded using an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera and found a high level of agreement between the two approaches for determining the vehicle type and fuel, with uncertainties of 1–4%. We also developed a new bottom-up assessment approach that used the noise analysis provided by the Traffic Ear sensor along with the extensively detailed urban mobility maps that were produced using the geospatial and temporal mapping of urban mobility (GeoSTMUM) approach. It was applied to vehicles travelling on roads in the West Midlands region of the UK. The results showed that the reduction in traffic engine noise over the whole of the study road was over 8% during rush hours, while the weekday–weekend effect had a deterioration effect of almost half. Traffic noise factors (dB/m) on a per-vehicle basis were almost always higher on motorways compared the other roads studied.

During the last decade, actions and studies to counteract the effects of noise have increased through the use of insulating or absorbent materials, and civil regulations based on monitoring in urban areas, since exposure to high levels of sound pressure can cause psychological and physiological health problems such as anxiety, depression, stress, fatigue, cardiac, hearing or cognitive problems, as well as irreversible hearing loss. This work aims to develop and study natural compounds made of clay reinforced with coconut or nopal fibers to analyze their acoustic coefficients and determine their applications as insulation or conditioning material. The composites were obtained incorporating 25, 50 and 75% by weight of each fiber with bentonite clay. The physical and chemical characterization of the composites was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The properties of hardness and apparent density of the composites were obtained from samples aged three months. Using XRD, the compounds were identified in the bentonite: montmorillonite, quartz and feldspar. The FT-IR allowed the identification of the functional groups of the clay and for the fibers the presence of lignin and hemicellulose was determined. Micrographs show that coconut fiber is more porous than nopal; the size of the nopal fibers was between 71.8 and 219.7 nm (electron microscopy) and that of the coconut fibers was 0.1613 mm (optical microscopy). The apparent density of the composites follows the model of the mixture rule, while the hardness changes very little in the samples prepared with nopal fiber. Through ATG it was found that bentonite improves the thermal stability of the composites. The acoustic absorption, reflection, and transmission coefficients of the materials were determined using the impedance tube method, in the range of 50 to 10,000 Hz. The samples obtained after the synthesis process was weighed and characterized in the impedance tube; For the humidity tests, a drop was placed on the surface of the sample and the characterization process was repeated. These tests were carried out until 4 drops of water were added to each composite. The results showed an increase in the acoustic absorption properties when adding the fibers in the composites, where it was observed that the coconut fiber presented a higher sound absorption than the nopal fiber. The hardness and density of the material are directly related to a reduction in the absorption coefficient, although the tests carried out show that the nopal fibers in the composites do not increase their hardness and their acoustic properties, unlike coconut fibers. The results obtained from the acoustic characterization carried out in the surface humidity test showed that the absorption, reflection and absorption coefficients of the coconut change with increasing humidity in the samples. While, in the case of nopal, due to its composition and hydrophobic properties, there is no significant variation in its acoustic properties. Composites made from coconut fiber have better acoustic absorption and reduction properties, while those made from nopal fiber stand out in terms of sound reflection.
