Expression Analysis of the LFY and TFL1 Homologs in Floral Buds of Japanese Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) and Quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.)

Abstract: We investigated the expression of Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) and quince (Cydonia oblonga) homologs of Arabidopsis thaliana flowering-related genes LEAFY (LFY) and TERMINAL FLOWER 1 (TFL1) in dissected floral tissues. Japanese pear and quince belong to the subfamily Maloideae (Rosaceae), which is an ancient polyploid; thus, the genome of each plant contains at least two different homologs of LFY and TFL1. We examined the expression of each homolog separately using gene-specific reverse transcription-polyme… Show more

“…Similar to peach, TFL1 expression was absent or low during floral differentiation in buds of apple (Hattasch et al, 2008;Mimida et al, 2009Mimida et al, , 2011, quince [C. oblonga (Esumi et al, 2008)], and rose [Rosa wichurana (Iwata et al, 2012)]. However, in pear (P. pyrifolia, P. communis), one of the two TFL1 genes was expressed during floral differentiation (Esumi et al, 2005(Esumi et al, , 2008.…”

“…The AFL genes have traits in common with the Arabidopsis thaliana LEAFY (LFY) and snapdragon, Antirrhinum majus, FLORICAULA (FLO) as the floral meristem identity gene (Coen et al, 1990;Wada et al, 2002;Weigel et al, 1992). The homologues from other herbaceous plants (Bomblies et al, 2003;Hofer et al, 1997;Kelly et al, 1995;MolineroRosales et al, 1999), woody plants (Mouradov et al, 1998;Rottman et al, 2000) and fruit trees (Carmona et al, 2002;Esumi et al, 2007;Esumi et al, 2008;Walton et al, 2001;Yu et al, 2005) are thought to be involved in the flowering events in a similar manner. The expression of AFL1 and AFL2 in Arabidopsis promotes flowering.…”
