Expression and prognostic value of platelet‐derived growth factor‐AA and its receptor α in nephroblastoma

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential role of platelet‐derived growth factor‐AA (PDGF‐AA) and the PDGF‐α receptor as prognostic markers in Wilms’ tumour. PATIENTS AND METHODS The expression of PDGF‐AA and PDGF‐α were investigated using immunohistochemical analysis of 62 Wilms’ tumours. Patients were treated with chemotherapeutic agents before surgery and had a mean follow‐up of 6.4 years. RESULTS PDGF‐AA and PDGF‐α were expressed by the mesenchymal tissue of the normal kidney and mainly detected in the epithe… Show more

“…Moreover, an autocrine PDGF-BB/PDGF β-receptor loop was found to mediate survival of large granular lymphocyte leukemia of both T- and NK-cell origin (37). In addition, co-expression of PDGF-AA and PDGF α-receptor in the epithelial part of Wilms' tumor of the kidney is common; in contrast to other tumors with autocrine PDGF stimulation, the expression of PDGF-A and PDGF α-receptor in Wilms' tumor correlates to favorable prognosis (38). …”

“…In Wilms’ tumor of the kidney, PDGF-A and PDGFRα was expressed in 50% and 55% of the cases, respectively, in a cohort of 62 patients; interestingly, expression of PDGF-A and PDGFRα correlated with good prognosis [231]. It is possible that expression of PDGF-A and PDGFRα reflect a differentiated phenotype and therefore correlates to favorable prognosis.…”

“…The potential diagnostic role of platelets in vascular diseases has been demonstrated in previous published reports (Berger et al, 2010; Chu et al, 2010; Muscari et al, 2009; Mutlu et al, 2013; Pyoa & Cho, 2016; Xia et al, 2015). The PLT and related PVI have been identified as biomarkers in various vascular diseases and malignant tumours (Berger et al, 2010; Ghanem, Nijman, Safan, van der Kwast, & van Steenbrugge, 2010; Muscari et al, 2009). Varicocele is a vascular disease with endothelial damage as the main pathophysiological basis (Tek et al, 2009).…”
