Expression of Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 3f Is Associated with Prognosis in Gastric Carcinomas

Abstract: Background: Eukaryotic initiation factor 3f (eIF3f) expression, which plays an important role in human cancer, is significantly decreased in various types of cancers. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of eIF3f in gastric carcinoma (GC), which until now has not been reported. Methods: Expression of eIF3f was detected by immunohistochemistry in GC tissues and adjacent non-cancerous tissues (ANCT) from 195 patients with stage I-III GC who underwent curative gastrectomy. Clinicopathological result… Show more

“…The siRNA down regulation of either eIF3c or eIF3f or eIF3m subunits pretty much destroys the entire octamer preserving only the YLC (eIF3a–b–g–i) module ( 25 ), which is still capable to promote very basic eIF3 functions that are, however, insufficient to support life of human cells ( 41 ). Hence any reports describing pathological phenotypes stemming from altered expression of these three subunits should be at least partially regarded as a failure of the dramatically compromised eIF3 complex to ensure productive general translation initiation in sick cells; like underexpression of eIF3f in gastric, melanoma and pancreatic cancers supposedly deregulating apoptosis ( 151 , 152 ), eIF3f ubiquitination and proteosomal degradation during muscle atrophy ( 153 ), overexpression of eIF3m in human cancer cell lines and colon cancer patient tissues ( 154 ), as well as overexpression of eIF3c in testicular seminoma cells ( 155 ).…”

“…In particular, the strategy of inhibiting EIF3H expression may suppress the progression of GC and improve patient prognosis (131). Furthermore, EIF3F was determined to serve an important role in the recurrence of GC; increased expression rates of EIF3F in GC were associated with higher 5-year survival rates of patients (133).…”

“…81 Low expression of eIF3f in gastric cancer is significantly associated with an increased serum level of carcinoma embryonic antigen. Downregulation of eIF3f was linked to more advanced tumor stages and likelihood of recurrence, 82 suggesting it may play an important role in the progression and recurrence of this type of cancer. 83 This apparent contradiction of eIF3f being a subunit underexpressed in cancer remains to be understood.…”
