Expression of extracellular matrix markers in benign meningiomas

Abstract: Meningiomas have mesenchymal differentiation and studies have confirmed that meningiomas express intermediate filaments of both mesenchymal and epithelial types including vimentin and keratin. To further characterize their mesenchymal properties, particularly the role of factors requiring adhesion, extracellular matrix degradation, and migration, meningiomas were examined for a panel of extracellular matrix markers. Immunoreactivity to the matrix metalloproteinases, MMP-2 and MMP-9, and their tissue inhibitor,… Show more

“…In contrast, no difference in MMP-9 expression has been observed between atypical and benign meningiomas, while increased MMP-2 expression has been described in atypical and anaplastic meningiomas compared with benign meningiomas 15) . High levels of MMP-2 and -9 expression in atypical and anaplastic meningiomas and a possible relationship between MMP-2 and -9 and invasion of meningiomas have been demonstrated in previous studies 4,14) . One study de- monstrated an association between MMP-2 and -9 expression and meningioma recurrence 15) .…”

“…The expression of MMP-2, -9, -11, -12 and -14 has been demonstrated in meningiomas 6,9,17) . MMP-2 and -9 expression in benign meningiomas has been observed in vivo and in vitro 4,19) . However, increased MMP-9 expression has been observed in atypical and anaplastic meningiomas, while there was no difference in MMP-2 expression in meningiomas of different histological grade 14) .…”

“…26,39 In this study we observed MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression in canine and feline meningiomas, showing an immunohistochemical reaction of the cytoplasm of tumor cells, as previously reported. 6,33 Nuclear staining was completely absent. Twentyone cases did not express MMP-2 (41.2%), and 2 cases did not express MMP-9 (2%).…”

“…CD99 is also strongly exhibited in certain cases of SFT, with a positive expression rate of 75-100% (12). At the same time, other referential elements exhibit no expression, including EMA, CK, S-100 and α-smooth muscle actin, as reported by previous studies (2,(13)(14)(15)(16). SFT is difficult to distinguish from meningeal hemangiopericytoma (HPC), which exhibits a high rate of recurrence and late extracranial …”
