Expression of Intermediate Filament Nestin in Blood Vessels of Neural and Non-neural Tissues

Abstract: Summary:Our previous findings performed in rat tissues demonstrated that intermediate filament nestin is expressed in endothelial cells of newly formed blood vessels of developing organs and neural transplants. The aim of the present study was to identify other cellular markers expressed in nestin-positive (nestin + ) blood vessels. To reach this goal we performed double immunofluorescent study to co-localize nestin with endothelium-specific markers (CD31, CD34 II, vimentin) or markers of perivascular cells (G… Show more

“…Coronal sections of the lower cervical cord were made at P5 and stained with DAPI and an anti-nestin antibody. As reported previously (Mokry et al, 2008;Hamilton et al, 2009;Sevc et al, 2009), nestin staining detected not only midline glia, but also blood vessels. D, Actual value for the predominance of MB holes for aberrant CST axon midline crossing was calculated as the ratio of the number of MB hole-crossing tdT(ϩ) axons to the number of total tdT(ϩ) midline crossing axons.…”

“…Furthermore, the number of newly formed nestin-positive capillaries per unit area was higher in the hyperthyroid rats vs controls. In large vessels, the endothelial expression of nestin, which is associated with newly formed capillaries, is related to adaptations to dynamic changes in the vascular network (Mokrý et al 2008). The higher shear stress produced by the greater RBF in the hyperthyroid group may play a role in their increased capillary formation.…”

“…However, several pieces of evidence indicate that nestin could be expressed in vascular cell types such as endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, pericytes, or juxtavascular microglia during vascular remodeling or development (Alliot et al 1999;Dahlstrand et al 1992;Mokrý et al 2008;Oikawa et al 2010;Yokoyama et al 2006). This diversity of cell types suggests that vascular nestin expression is not exclusive to neural stem cells.…”
