The modified quasichemical model for short-range ordering is described for liquid metal-sulfur solutions. Available thermodynamic data for molten Fe-S, Ni-S, Cu-S, and Co-S solutions are collected, critically evaluated, and optimized by means of the model. Very good descriptions of the thermodynamic properties are obtained with few parameters. Using only these binary parameters, the model predicts the thermodynamic properties of Fe-Ni-S, Fe-Cu-S, Ni-Cu-S, and Fe-Ni-Cu-S mattes over a wide range of composition and temperature within experimental error limits.

“…The liquid oxide ( slag ) phase is modeled in terms of a series of non‐ideally interacting species, either pure oxides, such as CaO and SiO 2 , or associated species, such as CaSiO 3 and Ca 2 SiO 4 , used to take account of sharp changes in the thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase at particular compositions. The ‘associate’ model [13, 14] is conceptually simple, flexible and, unlike other models which were tested, has no trouble representing amphoteric oxides and no tendency to predict spurious miscibility gaps. This type of model is also able to deal with both liquid sulfides (mattes) and liquid metals within the same set of data.…”

Thermodynamics has been used for evaluating phase ilibria in metals production processes at elevated temperatures already for more than half a century. The computational approach to phase ilibria of industrial systems is possible once assessed and internally consistent thermochemical databases are extensive enough to allow calculations in systems containing more than just 3 or 4 components. This paper describes the development of an oxide database Mtox developed at the National Physical laboratory under an industrially funded project coordinated by MIRO with up to 7 thermodynamic components and several subsets with additional components. The primary focus in the database development work has been metal smelting and refining processes, but also selected other high-temperature production environments have been considered. Selected applications of the Mtox database will be reviewed, including the obtained practical benefits of computational thermodynamics (CT) to the industrial end users.

It is well understood that the efficient recovery of values bypyrometallurgical processing of ores requires control of the slag chemistry. In an effort to improve the understanding of slags, a thermodynamic database on subsystems of the CaO-MgO-Fe-O-AlP3-Si0 2 system has been generated through critical assessment of the literature. Data for connecting systems of specific industrial interest are being added. The data can be combined using well-established thermodynamic principles to make calculations on the multicomponent systems of practical interest. Following a description of the calculations, this article illustrates specific applications of thermodynamic modeling to the extraction of copper, nickel, and precious metals; zinc extraction; purification of pig iron; meltdown in nuclear reactors; hot corrosion; and pollution control.
