Extensive pelvic calcification in association with ovarian serous cystadenofibroma

Abstract: We describe the first reported case of extensive calcification seen in association with serous cystadenofibroma of the ovary, illustrating that calcification in the female genital tract may be extensive in nature, presenting in a fashion that is not entirely typical of dystrophic or metastatic calcification. This case demonstrates that extensive calcification within the pelvis should be interpreted with caution, as it may not represent disseminated malignancy.

“…Others studies have identified the presence of psammoma bodies in body cavity fluids such as peritoneal fluid or pleural fluid as also a very rare finding (<4%), associated with benign conditions in approximately 36% of cases. 8 Benign conditions to consider include ovarian cystadenoma/cystadenofibroma, endosalpingiosis, endometriosis, endometritis, IUD, OCP, and mesothelial hyperplasia. 1,10,12,17 Psammoma bodies are almost always observed in association with epithelial components and only rarely are isolated psammoma bodies identified.…”

“…1,[8][9][10] Much less commonly psammoma bodies are found associated with endometrioid tumors, endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial polyps, endometritis, intra-uterine devices (IUD), and hormonal therapy such as oral contraceptive pill (OCP). 1,5,8 Reporting bias may explain why there is excess representation of malignant cases in the literature. In a large series review of cervical PAP tests, malignancy was found in less than half of cases presenting with psammoma bodies.…”
