Extensively variable surface antigens of Sarcocystis spp. infecting Brazilian marsupials in the genus Didelphis occur in myriad allelic combinations, suggesting sexual recombination has aided their diversification

Abstract: Sarcocystis neurona and Sarcocystis falcatula are very similar species of Apicomplexan protozoa that use marsupials of the genus Didelphis as definitive hosts. These mammals can serve as definitive hosts not only for these two parasites, but for other Sarcocystis such as Sarcocystis speeri and Sarcocystis lindsayi. Sarcocystis shed by opossums (with the exception of S. neurona) can cause disease in a great variety of birds, being commonly associated with acute pulmonary sarcocystosis in zoos. S. neurona is the… Show more

“…was found in a previous study in opossums from the south region of Brazil (MONTEIRO et al, 2013). A high number of alleles were found for each gene (SAG2, SAG3 and SAG4) and three distinct lineages were defined: two lineages genetically related to S. falcatula and one lineage genetically similar to S. neurona (neurona-like).…”

“…At the three SAG loci, S. neurona-07-2015-RS-BR was identical to Sarcocystis sp. genotype II derived from opossum's sporocysts in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, described by Monteiro et al (2013).…”

“…From the analysis of SAG2, SAG3, and SAG4, S. neurona-07-2015-RS-BR was identical to Sarcocystis sp. identified in opossum sporocysts in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Monteiro et al 2013), indicating that variants of S. neurona different from those occurring elsewhere in the Americas are being transmitted in Brazil. Studies including more samples of S. neurona would be required to test this hypothesis, as well as to assess the impact of this diversity.…”

“…A diferenciação entre as duas espécies vem sendo estudada através de análises moleculares e estudos filogenéticos (TANHAUSER et al, 1999;SCHOTT II;, porém em estudos recentes foram levantadas hipóteses para explicar a extensa variabilidade dos padrões genéticos encontrados, sugerindo a possibilidade de haver trocas gênicas de alelos distintos entre as espécies de Sarococystis que realizam gametogonia em epitélio intestinal de gambás (MONTEIRO et al, 2013).…”
