External and internal training load relationships in soccer players

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between internal training loads (TL) (Polar (PLR), Edwards (EDW) Training-Impulse (TRIMP) session RPE (s-RPE) external TL (Total distance (TD), covered distance in five different zone, number of acceleration (ACC) and deceleration actions (DEC) in professional soccer players. Twenty male professional soccer players (age = 27.6 years; height = 177.6±7.1 cm; body mass = 69± 8.3 kg) from a professional soccer team voluntarily participated in the study.… Show more

“…In addition, differently from absolute values, relative ones provide normalized score-both external (e.g., percentage of maximal speed or power) and internal (e.g., RPE and percentages of HRmax or V Ȯ2 max) loads-in accordance with sport's demand (45,46,55,81). Although studies performed in soccer used absolute external or internal-intensity approaches (5,8,50), we speculate that should be necessary consider both relative external and internal factors to correctly evaluate the exercises' intensity in soccer. Actually, an athlete can perform a large quantity of highintensity running, but with a low internal response (e.g., low percentage of HR max).…”

“…Moreover, concerning external intensity, evaluating intermittent activity only by using speed measures permits to assess only a partial component of external physical demand (78). Indeed, studies reported that player load (calculated from accelerations) is largely associated with S-RPE (8,38,88). Moreover, Gaudino et al stated that for assessing performance demands, the use of metabolic power (derived by speed and accelerations) is more appropriated respect to the use of only speeds (38).…”

“…Son yıllarda futbol içerisinde rekabet ortamının artması, maç takvimlerinin uzunluğu gibi durumlar hem bireysel hem de takım başarısını etkilemeye başlamış durumdadır (Alemdaroğlu, 2021). Antrenörler, spor bilimciler ve kondisyonerler sporcuların performans düzeylerini ve sedanterlerin sağlıkla ilgili parametrelerini geliştirmek için yeni antrenman metotları arayışı içerisindedirler (Issurin, 2010).…”
