External ophthalmomyiasis: a case series

Abstract: Oestrus ovis or 'sheep botfly' causes common ophthalmomyiasis in warm climates. It is a self-limited infestation with symptoms such as foreign body sensation and/or tearing. The larvae can be observed in the conjunctiva and should be extracted with forceps. The development of larvae beyond the first stage does not occur in healthy humans, although they may penetrate the ocular globe, causing so-called internal myiasis. External ophthalmomyiasis is typical of rural areas, but it may be observed occasionally in … Show more

“…Fortunately oestrus ovis larvae are unable to secrete proteolytic enzymes, neither inflammation nor itself does not invade the inner parts of eye [8]. Because of the necessary food for larvae to develop is not found in human tear, larvae cannot continue life cycle and die as first stage larvae [9]. Since they hold conjunctiva with their hooks wherein their mouths and segments, death of larvae and again with the same reason irrigation of conjunctiva as the treatment is not efficient.…”

“…Eggs and larvae can be transported to the ocular surface by ticks, mosquitoes, or even the patient's hands. External ophthalmomyiasis primarily involves the conjunctiva and eyelid, while internal ophthalmomyiasis occurs when larvae invade the eyeball or orbital region [4].…”

“…O.ovis pasauliniu mastu yra dažniausias oftalmomiazės sukėlėjas. Jis paplitęs šiltuose Viduržemio jūros regionuose, Azijoje ir Amerikoje [12]. A. Bakrač ir kiti atlikto tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad beveik pusė O. ovis sukeltos akių miazės atvejų yra užregistruoti miestuose.…”
