“…There is evidence from the present study that at least some of the inhibitory activity may be associated with a proteolytic enzyme. This work was similar to that reported by Shastry and Prasad (2002) who showed that Pseudomonas sp. (CL 1457) produced an extracellular alkaline protease against heat killed cells of Xanthomonas campestris.…”

“…The cell walls of Gram negative bacteria are surrounded by an outer membrane consisting of lipopolysaccharides, phospholipids and lipoproteins and thus they are less sensitive to bacteriolytic enzymes than Gram positive bacteria (Wang et al 2008). Only a few lytic enzymes have been reported to lyse cells of Gram negative bacteria (Shastry and Prasad, 2002); therefore, it is interesting that the isolate W3 produced lytic enzymes that acted to remove the outer membrane as some leaky cells can be seen by electron microscopy (arrows in Figure 2d and 2f; Figure 3d). After removal of their outer membrane Vibrio cells become more easily damaged by other bioactive compounds produced by the isolate W3.…”

“…The color developed by free Tyr was measured at 540 nm (Shastry and Prasad, 2002). When indicated, bacterial protein was incubated for 5 min at 37 1C with 0.5 mL HMMC or MMMC solutions (0.1 mg mL À1 ) prior to substrate addition.…”
