Extracting Randomness from the Trend of IPI for Cryptographic Operations in Implantable Medical Devices

Abstract: Achieving secure communication between an Implantable Medical Device (IMD) inside the body and a gateway outside the body has showed its criticality with recent reports of hackings such as in St. Jude Medical's Implantable Cardiac Devices, Johnson and Johnson insulin pumps and vulnerabilities in brain Neuro-implants. The use of asymmetric cryptography in particular is not a practical solution for IMDs due to the scarce computational and power resources, symmetric key cryptography is preferred. One of the facto… Show more

“…Remarkably, there is a large number of works ( 16) that do not evaluate how good the derived tokens are. In addition to that, we did only find two papers where authors evaluated whether the heart can be considered a good source of entropy [199,200]. The main reason might be due to the high constraints in terms of size of the dataset that the NIST set: "a sequential dataset of at least 1,000,000 consecutive sample values obtained directly from the noise source".…”

“…The scheme has been further improved by the group [93] using Error-Correcting Codes (ECC). IPIs can also be accumulated to improve randomness, such as MRE-IPI [94], a new randomness extraction method which can extract Martingale Randomness from IPIs of ECG signals.…”
