Extraction, Chemical Composition, and Anticancer Potential of Origanum onites L. Essential Oil

Abstract: Origanum species are plants rich in volatile oils that are mainly used for culinary purposes. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the biological activities of their essential oils. Origanum onites L. is a plant mainly found in Greece, Turkey, and Sicily, whose oil is rich in carvacrol, a highly bioactive phytochemical. The aim of this study was to analyze the chemical composition of Origanum onites essential oil (OOEO), and investigate its potential anticancer effects in vitro and in vivo. GC… Show more

“…In a recent study, the essential oil of O. Onites isolated from plants collected in Northern Greece has shown dose-dependent antiproliferative activity in vitro, especially against the colon cancer cell line HT-29 (followed by A375, MCF-7 and HepG2 carcinomas). Treatment with the oil caused time-dependent cytotoxicity against HT-29 and CT26 cells (murine colon cancer cell line), attenuation of their migration, and apoptosis-like features, while oral administration for 13 days significantly inhibited the growth of CT26 tumors in mice [30].…”

“…The essential oils extracted from O . onites possessed antiproliferative, anti‐migratory, and pro‐apoptotic properties against colon cancer (Spyridopoulou et al, 2019). These findings suggest that Origanum essential oils can be used as nutraceuticals for colon cancer prevention.…”

“…Monoterpenes are the most widespread naturally occurring organic chemicals, being the main constituents of essential oils [12][13][14]. They show antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic, anxiolytic, and anticancer properties, and they are of interest as a source of therapeutic alternatives [15][16][17]. Perillyl alcohol, a naturally occurring monoterpene found in the essential oils of peppermint and lavender, has been widely studied [18], demonstrating effectiveness against a variety of human tumor cell lines [19][20][21].…”
