Extraction of High-Precision Urban Impervious Surfaces from Sentinel-2 Multispectral Imagery via Modified Linear Spectral Mixture Analysis

Abstract: This study explores the performance of Sentinel-2A Multispectral Instrument (MSI) imagery for extracting urban impervious surface using a modified linear spectral mixture analysis (MLSMA) method. Sentinel-2A MSI provided 10 m red, green, blue, and near-infrared spectral bands, and 20 m shortwave infrared spectral bands, which were used to extract impervious surfaces. We aimed to extract urban impervious surfaces at a spatial resolution of 10 m in the main urban area of Guangzhou, China. In MLSMA, a built-up im… Show more

“…where ρ Green , ρ R , ρ NIR , and ρ SWIR1 are the Sentinel-2A reflectance of bands 3, 4, 8b, and 11, respectively. The 10 m urban impervious surface and vegetation fractions were extracted using the modified linear spectral mixture analysis (MLSMA) method with the Sentinel-2A imagery [41]. In MLSMA, the high-precision impervious surface and vegetation fractions were extracted by integrating the conventional LSMA and Otsu's approaches with NDBI and NDVI.…”

“…Some studies have used Sentinel-2 imagery to evaluate impervious surfaces (Y. H. Chen et al, 2018;Priem et al, 2019;Tzelidi et al, 2019). Xu et al (2018) used a Modified Linear Spectral Mixture Analysis (MLSMA) technique to extract impervious surfaces in Guangzhou City. The results showed that the impervious surfaces extracted from Sentinel-2 imagery had better details and could clearly identify the boundaries of continuous roads and buildings in the urban environment.…”

“…Sentinel-2 imagery was already deployed to estimate the degree of imperviousness (Lefebvre et al, 2016;Xu et al, 2018). However, a joint derivation of built-up density and height was just recently proposed by Geiß et al (2017Geiß et al ( , 2019 based on an integrative analysis of TDM and Sentinel-2 data.…”
