Extracts from Epilobium sp. Herbs, Their Components and Gut Microbiota Metabolites of Epilobium Ellagitannins, Urolithins, Inhibit Hormone‐Dependent Prostate Cancer Cells‐(LNCaP) Proliferation and PSA Secretion

Abstract: Extracts from Epilobium sp. herbs have been traditionally used in the treatment of prostate-associated ailments. Our studies demonstrated that the extracts from Epilobium angustifolium, Epilobium parviflorum and Epilobium hirsutum herbs are potent prostate cancer cells (LNCaP) proliferation inhibitors with IC50 values around 35 µg/ml. The tested extracts reduced prostate specific antigen (PSA) secretion (from 325.6 ± 25.3 ng/ml to ~90 ng/ml) and inhibited arginase activity (from 65.2 ± 1.1 mUnits of urea/mg of… Show more

“…However, due to insufficient clinical data, no medicinal products with predefined indication are commercially available in Europe (Kujawski et al, 2011;Stolarczyk et al, 2013a). Rosebay willow-herb shows antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiproliferative, and anti-exudative activities (Hevesi Toth et al, 2009;Kiss et al, 2011;Kosalec et al, 2013;Onar et al, 2012;Stolarczyk et al, 2013b;Vitalone et al, 2001Vitalone et al, , 2003Vogl et al, 2013).…”

“…ET-rich herbal extracts have been shown to inhibit LNCaP cell proliferation and reduce PSA secretion. 34 Other authors have also attributed estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activity to urolithins based on their binding affinity to the estrogen receptor in MCF-7 cells, labeling urolithins as potential endocrine-disruptive molecules. 29 Prostate-specific antigen is a well-known prostate tumor marker, expressed at a high level in the luminal epithelial cells of the prostate and is absent or expressed at very low levels in other tissues.…”

“…It is interesting to note that ARG activity is related to tumour progression, since the formation of polyamines and proline that are the result of enzyme action can contribute to cell proliferation and tumour growth, as shown by studies that have found a relationship of risk between the increased expression of ARG 2 and the appearance of disease [93,105]. Thus, ARG inhibition has the potential to curb this process, which might work in favour of the action of other anticancer substances.…”

“…Stolarczyk et al [105] studied the aqueous and ethyl acetate extracts (aerial parts) of three species of Epilobium sp. [Epilobium angustifolium L., Epilobium parviflorum Schreb, and Epilobium hirsutum L. (Onagraceae)], as well as polyphenols isolated from these species, in relation to the ARG of prostate cancer (LNcaP) cells and demonstrated that almost all the extracts (50 and 70 µg/mL) and phenolics that were tested, which included quercetin-3-Oglucuronide and oenothein B (20 and 40 µM), were able to significantly inhibit enzymatic action.…”
