Extranodal Interdigitating Dendritic Cell Sarcoma Presenting in the Pleura: A Case Report

Abstract: Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is an extremely rare neoplasm arising from the antigen-presenting cells of the immune system. This disease usually involves the lymph nodes, and rarely, extranodal sites may be affected. The authors report a case of extranodal IDCS presenting in the pleura. A 32-yr-old man presented with progressive chest pain. Imaging studies showed diffuse pleural thickening with pleural effusion. Morphological and immunohistochemical analysis of an incisional biopsy of the pleur… Show more

“…The characteristic kidney-shaped nuclei have also been reported before in canine HS (33,39,46) and in human HS (47) and IDCS (14). Indentations of the nucleus have been reported in the canine literature (1,7,24,26,28) as well as in human HS (41) and IDCS (48), and a combination of indentations, grooves or folds in human HS (43,49), IDCS (14) and LCH (50). This indicates that a canine subtype comparable to human LCH/LCS may also exist.…”

“…Typically, cervical lymph nodes are involved, but occasionally, other lymph nodes such as in the axillary region are also affected [64,181,194,222]. Involvement of surrounding areas such as the nasal cavity, parotid gland, and pleura [72,84,116,120,157], as well as the genital area and the intestinal tract has also been described [93,120,127]. Whereas the tumor masses usually are the first clinical symptom, systemic symptoms like fever or fatigue may occur in advanced stages [194].…”

“…1,2 The tumor usually initially develops at the Tcell-rich region of the lymph node, although the involvement of extra-nodal sites such as the spleen, intestine, testis, urinary bladder, lung, kidney, and bone marrow has also been reported. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Cutaneous lesions are extremely rare, and fewer than 10 cases have been reported. 10,11 Although various treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hematopoietic stem cell trans-plantation have been attempted, there is no consensus on the preferred treatment.…”
