Unlike other structures in the vicinity of the Chittagong Tripura Fold Belt, the Changotaung anticline is one of Bangladesh's least explored structures. An attempt has been made for the first time to understand and document sedimentary deposits, environments, structure, and tectonic activity based on the high-resolution outcrop and reconnaissance study with the knowledge of broad-brush geology. We found that Changotaung is a symmetrical box-folded structure with an extensive western flank where the amount of dip varies between 11° and 45°. The exposed Cenozoic succession was categorized into three separate sedimentary sequences and correlated with the conventional stratigraphic unit. A first-order simple Markovian approach was presented for the exposed litho-section in an effort to illustrate vertical facies variations in the Upper Surma group. We quantified that heterolithic bed mostly overlies both trough cross-bedding ($${P}_{ij}U$$ P ij U = 0.706) and parallel laminated bed ($${P}_{ij}U=0.955)$$ P ij U = 0.955 ) according to the facies transition probability matrix. According to the results of the stationary distribution, there is a 40% chance of coming across heterolithic beds within the Upper Surma group during any given event that is completely random whereas trough cross-bedding, parallel laminated bed, cumulative sandstone facies, and cumulative shale facies shows around 10.8%, 15.2%, 20.6%, 13.4% probability. We hypothesized, based on the interpretive facies analysis, that the Chittagong Tripura fold belt region's Upper Surma Group underwent three interrelated depositional settings (wave-dominated shallow marine, tide-dominated shallow marine, and fluvio-deltaic distributary).

The post-orogenic terrestrial accumulations of Dupitila Formation (Mio-Pliocene) have been studied for the first time in the Cachar Thrust Fold Belt of Northeast India employing facies and architectural element analysis techniques. Six lithocolumns measuring 85 m in thickness were analyzed at the outcrop level with minimum resolutions of 20-30 cm. Seven lithofacies, namely clast-supported horizontally stratified gravel (Gh), matrix-supported planar cross-bedded gravel (Gp), trough cross-bedded sandstone (St), planar cross-bedded sandstone (Sp), horizontally bedded sandstone (Sh), laminated sand-silt-mud (Fl) and massive mud (Fm), were identified. The two lithofacies assemblages, i.e., interbedded gravel-sand and sand-mud associations, characterize the lower and upper divisions of Dupitila Formation, respectively. Identification of five architectural elements, i.e., channel fill complex (CHm), single channel (CHs), gravel bar and bedform (GB), sand bed form (SB) and floodplain fines (FF), was accomplished through lithofacies distribution and arrangement of bounding surfaces. Alternating gravelly and sandy facies succeeded by floodplain fines present an overall thinning and fining upward cycle resembling the gravelly and sandy braided fluvial stream deposits. A semi-humid climatic condition has been envisaged for the formation of lithic to sub-lithic (Q 66 F 9 R 25) Dupitila sandstone. These deposits have suffered early as well as late-stage diagenetic changes. The diversified detritus delivery to the fluviatile Dupitila basin was largely made by a recycled orogen comprising of Shillong massif, eastern Himalaya and the Indo-Burman Range.

ABSTRACTThe discrimination/characterization of depositional systems recorded in formal lithostratigraphic, Cenozoic, continental, epiclastic units of Mexico, is largely a pending task, notwithstanding its great academic and economic importance. Contributing to fill this gap, we present a first approach to discriminate and characterize the depositional systems of the late Eocene Yolomécatl Formation, which fills the namesake, triangle-shaped tectonic basin, and carries the southernmost Paleogene vertebrate fauna of North America. The study area lies between 17°25'-17°30' North Latitude and 97°29'-97°36' West Longitude, and between 2000-2500 m a.s.l.; the federal highway 125 traverses it; Santiago Yolomécatl is the main town.The Yolomécatl Formation is at least 650 m thick, although the continuous thickness measured in the principal reference section is much less (~250 m); it includes fluvial and lake depositional systems sparsely interbedded by tuff sheets (a system per se). The fluvial system consists of 1) Gmm, Gmg, Gcm lithofacies: alluvial fans and related deposits; 2) Gm, Gh, Gp, Gt, St, Sp lithofacies: channel lag deposits; 3) Sr, Sh, Sl, Fl lithofacies: floodplain deposits. The (clastic) lacustrine system includes: 1) Ll, Lsm, Lm lithofacies: offshore deposits; 2) Ll, Lsm lithofacies: playa lake and mud flats deposits. This large thickness of this unit indicates superposition of fluvial/lacustrine systems, and sparse pyroclastic emplacements that took place in a basin gradually subsiding with sedimentation, under humid to subhumid conditions, probably interrupted by seasonal dryness.Finally, the tectonic setting of the Yolomécatl Basin, indicates that its genesis and development are related to the dynamics of the regional, left-lateral strike-slip Tamazulapam fault, which is also regarded as the boundary between the Mixteca (west) and Oaxaca (east) terranes. INTRODUCTIONAfter ~130 years of geologic research in Mexico, important tasks have been barely touched, such as the discrimination and characterization of depositional systems registered in formal, continental, epiclastic, Cenozoic lithostratigraphic units of this country, in spite of their academic and economic importance.
