Facile electronic communication between bimetallic termini bridged by elemental carbon chains

Abstract: Rich electrochemistry and strong electronic couplings across the carbon bridges are revealed for compounds composed of two tetra(m-N,NA-2-anilinopyridinate)diruthenium(II,III) termini bridged by either butadiynediyl (1) or ethynediyl (2) ligands.

“…Our laboratory is interested in developing molecular wires based on linear metal-alkynyl species with a focus on diruthenium compounds supported by N,N 0 -bidentate ligands [12,13]. These diruthenium alkynyl species exhibit small electrochemical and optical energy gaps [14,15] and mediate efficient charge transfer [16][17][18]. Corroborating results reported for other metal-containing OPE molecules [19], recent STM study of Ru 2 (ap) 4 (C"CC 6 H 4 ) 2 S (ap is 2-anilinopyridinate) embedded in the SAM of C11 alkane thiol revealed a markedly improved molecular conductance over OPE molecule of comparable length [12,20].…”

“…Many studies have been carried out with complexes containing chains of carbon atoms, C 2x , linking metal centres such as Mn(dppe)Cp 0 (Cp 0 = Cp, Cp Me ) [10], Re(NO)(PPh 3 )Cp* [11], Fe(dppe)Cp* [12], Ru(PP)Cp 0 [(PP)Cp 0 = (PPh 3 ) 2 Cp, (dppe)Cp*] [13], Os(dppe)Cp* [14], Ru 2 (LL) 4 [15,16], and Pt(Ar)(PAr 0 3 ) 2 (Ar = tol, C 6 F 5 , Ar 0 = tol) [17]. Recent reviews of this chemistry are available [18][19][20][21].…”

“…It has been established that extensive electronic couplings between [M] termini exist in the type I dimer with M as Ru 2 (ap ) 4 (Scheme 1, ap0/2-anilinopyridinate), but the coupling strength decreases exponentially as the distance between two [M] increases [2,3]. A possible strategy to maintain coupling strength over a long distance is to use oligomeric metallaynes (II in Scheme 1) of a minimal number of acetylenic units (m ) between adjacent [M] units.…”
