Factor structure and measurement invariance of the Revised Brief Addiction Monitor.

Abstract: There are currently 2 versions of the Brief Addiction Monitor (BAM) being widely used within Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and other treatment settings: the BAM, which entails use of discrete response options for all items, and the revised version, the BAM-R, which consists of the same items but uses continuous response options for several of the items. There is also conflicting evidence about the factor structure of the original BAM, with a 4-factor structure proposed by 1 study that ref… Show more

“…We attempted a four-factor solution, as demonstrated in ( Gaddy et al., 2018 ; Hallinan et al., 2021 ), with the remaining 13 items, which resulted in a more interpretable finding, with the four factors explaining 50.6 percent of the variance (see Table 3 ). The first factor was saliently loaded by items representing physical and psychological stressors and accounted for 19.1% of the variance.…”

“…The version of BAM we used is simpler to complete on a phone app, but a revised version may be more predictive. 19 Although we have routinely used BAM in our practice for several years, newer evidence suggests that it may not perform well in a non-veteran population. 20 Core requirements for the program are taking buprenorphine as prescribed, attending scheduled visits, and providing on-demand urine toxicology tests.…”
