Factors affecting survival after excision of the rectum for cancer

Abstract: After adjusting for age and clinicopathologic stage, significantly poorer survival was experienced by males, patients with extensive tumor adherent to other organ(s), those with a high-grade tumor or a tumor showing venous invasion, those who had a postoperative cardiovascular or respiratory complication, and those who did not undergo surgery by a colorectal surgeon specialist. The nature of the operation performed had no independent effect on survival.

“…27 In contrast, Bokey et al found a poorer prognosis for patients with a postoperative complication compared with those who had no complications. 28 The same disagreement exists regarding head and neck cancer: Schantz et al reported improved survival associated with postoperative wound infection in laryngeal carcinoma. 29 Others, on the contrary, saw increased recurrence rates and decreased survival for patients who had had a postoperative wound infection.…”

“…In a multicenter study in northern Italy (23), a reduced gastric cancer risk was observed in women with later menopause and longer duration of fertile life. The favorable prognostic value of females, mainly younger patients, has been shown not only in gastric carcinoma (24), but also in tumors of other organs such as lung, liver, and colorectum (25)(26)(27).…”
