Abstract
Introduction:The administration of Chemotherapy in infusion centers poses some challenges such as the patient´s length of stay-ing, as well as the nursing interventions to be performed at that time. Objectives: Identify the interventions performed by nurses at a facility of chemotherapy infusion, according to the Nursing Intervention Classifications, as well as to measure the nursing personnel's workload and productivity. Patients and Methods: This is an observational study using a work-related sampling technique. It was carried out at a facility of chemotherapy infusion of a major hospital in the state of São Paulo, which is special-ized in Oncology. The study sample was composed of seven nurses, and we observed the performance of 1,487 nursing activities. Results: The analysis comprised 35 nursing measures and 85 nursing activities. The meantime of nursing interventions related to direct care was as follows: Supervision of employees (27.2 min); checking the emergency cart (23.3 min); and nursing consultation (23.1 min). The most common activities performed were exchange of information on health care (12.2%); documentation (1.5%); administration of drugs intravenously (11.1%); 11.6% in associated activities, and 12% on personal activities, with a mean pro-ductivity of 88.0%. Conclusion: Using the Nursing Intervention Classifications was possible to identify the nursing workload at a facility of chemotherapy infusion pointing out a productivity index, which was higher than that recommended by the literature.
