Factors affecting variation in the vase life response of waxflower cultivars (Myrtaceae: Chamelaucium Desf. and Verticordia spp. Desf.) tested under various vase solutions

Abstract: The effects of genotype and vase solutions on the vase lives of waxflower cultivars were studied. The vase life of 16 cultivars derived from different genetic backgrounds showed a variation. The vase life of Chamelaucium uncinatum cultivars held in deionised water was generally the shortest, with four cultivars averaging 9.5 and 8.9 days for flowers and leaves while the vase lives of C. uncinatum × megalopetalum hybrids were on average 16.0 and 25.0 days for flowers and leaves, respectively. The hybrid 'Southe… Show more

“…imbalance between water and mineral supply and loss due to the resistance of water flow in the stem (Ahmad, Dole, & Blazich, 2014;Satoh, Nukui, & Inokuma, 2005;In, Seo, & Lim, 2016). Water facilitates the chemical reaction within the cell to keep biological activities and maintain cell turgor and flower freshness (Dung, Seaton, & Singh, 2016;Soleiman-Fard, Hemmati, & Khalighi, 2013).…”

“…'Fuego' . Thus, the water balance between the transpiration and water uptake is an essential factor in determining the longevity of cut flowers (Dung et al 2016). Water blockage can be caused by several factors, such as air-trapped inside the pit cell membranes resulting in the prevention of water flow (an air emboli) (van Ieperen et al 2002), physical wounds that cause tissue decay (Wang et al 2014) and vascular occlusions by microbial activities Nemati et al 2013).…”

“…While the response of different cultivars to the same solution was different, the response of each cultivar to the different solutions was different. Dung et al (2016) stated that vase life of waxflowers was different to vase solutions, depending on genetic. With the presence of Diox Forte, the shelflife of cultivar 'Rista' (24 days) was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that of cultivar 'Octavio' (40 days) or 'Olivade' (31 days).…”
