Factors Associated with Condom Use in Vaginal Intercourse Among Spanish Heterosexual and Bisexual Men

Abstract: Introduction In Spain, the sexual route is the main route of transmission in new HIV diagnoses. Men who have heterosexual relations are the second group with the highest incidence of new HIV cases and have the highest rates of late diagnosis in Spain. Planning the response to the HIV epidemic requires specific and updated information on this group. This study aims to analyze sexual practices and frequency of condom use in heterosexual and bisexual men and identify variables that explain inconsist… Show more

“…Despite a greater risk of sexual violence to these sexual minorities, all of them have involvement in sex with their sexual partners showing their active sexual life. They indulge most in oral sex (86.7%) and anal sex (84.1%) than vaginal and other types of sexes which is very consistent with a study that demonstrated 84.9% performing oral sex in the top first position among the sexual practices of both heterosexual and bisexual men aged 18-57 years (Morell-Mengual et al, 2022). Their multiple sexual practices show their multiple, overlapped and complex roles which reveal the multiple identities and complexities in sexual orientation and behaviours of the sexual minorities (Galupo et al, 2015).…”

“…The sexual minorities adopt different safety measures to prevent or minimize the risk of their sexual behaviors. Above three-quarter of them use condom while having anal and vaginal intercourses with their sex partners; the use of condom is higher than a study that showed 64.9% of the men using condom during vaginal intercourse and 63.6% during anal intercourse (Morell-Mengual et al, 2022). But still over one-fifth (21.1%) of the sexual minorities in the study area are at the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and infections.…”

“…The literature has shown different explanatory models of SRBs, such as the planned action theory [ 12 ], the health belief model [ 13 ], and the protective motivation theory [ 14 ]. In particular, these models highlight the relevance of self-efficacy, sexual assertiveness, knowledge, attitudes, and perception of risk and severity, among other variables [ 15 ], as associated factors with SRBs [ 16 ]. Evidence shows that different safe (e.g., increased condom use) or risky behaviors (e.g., multiple sexual partners; inappropriate condom use) are associated with different psychological factors, including behavioral dispositions or personality traits [ 17 ]; ability to identify risky and safe behaviors [ 18 ]; perceived vulnerability or risk [ 19 ]; sexual self-image [ 20 ]; and attitude toward condoms [ 21 ].…”

“…Otros autores van más allá, y relacionan el consumo de alcohol con conductas de riesgo. Así, se ha encontrado que el consumo de alcohol está asociado con la práctica de conductas sexuales de riesgo, como no hacer uso del preservativo en relaciones sexuales orales, vaginales y anales (Berger et al, 2013;Miller, 2012;Snipes & Benotsch, 2013;Morell-Mengual et al, 2022).…”
