Factors Conditioning the Potential Effects TiO2 NPs Exposure on Human Microbiota: a Mini-Review

Abstract: The recent years have seen a significant interest in the applications of nanotechnology in various facets of our lives. Due to their increasingly widespread use, human exposure to nanoparticles (NPs) is fast becoming unavoidable. Among the wide group of nanoparticles currently employed in industry, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, TiO2 NPs, are particularly popular. Due to its white colour, TiO2 is widely used as a whitening food additive (E 171). Yet, there have been few studies aimed at determining its direct… Show more

“…In May 2021, the Panel of EFSA concluded that E171 can no longer be considered safe when used as a food additive [116]. TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were present in different kinds of products such as sauces, cheeses, skimmed milk, ice-cream, coating for sweets, and chewing gum [117]. Increased consumption of TiO 2 NPs can negatively impact the human microbiome [118].…”

“…Available data suggest that TiO 2 NPs may influence microbiota, disturb digestion and absorption of food components causing problems such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, or deficiencies of macro- and microelements in the body. Indeed, there are increasing concerns that its presence may lead to intestinal barrier impairment, including dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota [ 43 , 56 ]. Studies concerning toxicity after oral administration to rats show no obvious signs of acute toxicity [ 41 , 43 ].…”

“…At the same time, there have been studies that revealed a limited influence of TiO 2 NPs on human microbiota. Currently available reports therefore provide contradictory evidence in terms of the impact of TiO 2 NPs on human microbiota due to the application of varying experimental models and frameworks [ 56 ].…”

“…are consumed per day in the USA and Great Britain, respectively. However, due to their lower body weight and the higher consumption of sweets, children under 10 years of Foods 2021, 10, 2 of 12 age may ingest from 1-2 mg to 2-3 mg TiO 2 /kg per day in the USA and Great Britain, respectively [2,8]. In turn, 0.5-0.7 mg TiO 2 /kg b.w./day [9] and 0.2-0.4 mg TiO 2 /kg b.w./day are consumed in the Netherlands and Europe, respectively [10].…”
