Factors controlling summer phytoplankton production in greater Cook Strait, New Zealand

Abstract: An intensive study was made of greater Cook Strait in the summers of 1980 and 1981 to determine the availability of dissolved inorganic nutrients in surface waters and the influence this may have on phytoplankton production. Phytoplankton biomass in greater Cook Strait appears to be controlled mainly by zooplankton grazing and turbulence or advection. The relative influence of factors governing primary production on phytoplankton distribution was assessed for the tidal mixing area off Marlborough Sounds, Manaw… Show more

“…Upwelling of nutrient rich water has been observed in Cook Strait during periods of north-westerly wind flow (Bradford et al 1986), in areas where young hoki occur in abundance ). South-westerly flow over the South Island can result in localised north-westerly flow through Cook Strait (Reid 1996), so either north-westerly or south-westerly conditions over the country could result in favourable conditions for young hoki in Cook Strait.…”

“…There has been no report of an established or prolonged upwelling of nutrient-laden subsurface waters in the STCZ about the south of New Zealand that might compare to the Cape Farewell feature at the north of the South Island (Bradford et al 1986). Our inspection of remotely sensed SST images of the region dating back to 1986 corroborate this statement, although it should be remembered that SST may not resolve upwelling in all instances.…”

“…In Cook Strait, upwelling of nutrient rich water along the NE coast of the South Island where young hoki are known to occur in abundance (Murdoch et al 1990), has been observed during periods of NW wind flow (Bradford et al 1986). It may be that because of the Cook Strait funnelling effect under conditions of SW flow, upwelling and productive conditions favourable to hoki also occur.…”
