Factors determining milk quality and implications for production structure under somatic cell count standard modification

Abstract: Consumer and processor demand for high-quality milk has placed increasing pressure on US milk producers to achieve higher product standards. International standards for somatic cell count (SCC) are becoming more stringent, but in May 2011, the United States National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments chose to retain the 750,000 cells/mL standard. Using ordinary least squares and quantile regressions on US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Resource Management Survey Dairy Costs and Returns Report data… Show more

“…The herd size effects are not significant after controlling farmers’ production behavior, which is consistent with Dong et al. (), who found that effect of herd size on some safety measurement were not significant after controlling for investment and management practices. The regional dummy variable, Weifang, indicates that there is no significant difference in safety of raw milk between Weifang and other regions.…”

“…Milk yield varies by location due to weather, specifically heat and humidity (Key and Sneeringer, ; Rhoads et al., ; West, ). In SPF equation , location is categorized into eight groups based on USDA ERS farm resource regions (FRRs) (Dong et al., ). The FRRs are clustered by counties instead of states, and therefore a state can be categorized into different regions.…”

Similar to other types of milk, camel milk contains a high level of microorganisms, reaching 10 5 cfu/mL (Dong et al, 2012). Therefore, studying the intrinsic microbiota composition is of high practical significance for the industrialization and promotion of camel milk.…”
