Background: The type of farming practices employed within an agro-ecosystem have some effects on its health and sustainable agricultural production. Thus, it is important to encourage farmers to make use of ecosystem-friendly farming practices if agricultural production is to be sustainable and this requires the identification of the critical success factors. This paper therefore examined the factors to consider in promoting sustainable agriculture production in Africa through ecosystem-based farm management practices (EBFMPs) using Ghana as a case study. The study employed mixed methods-qualitative and quantitative techniques. Data were collected through key informant interviews, focus group discussions and a semi-structured questionnaire administered to 300 households. The Poisson and negative binomial models were employed to determine the factors that influence farmers' intensity of adoption of EBFMPs. Eight (8) EBFMPs were used in the paper as the dependent variable, which are organic manure application, conservation of vegetation, conservative tillage, mulching, crop rotation, intercropping with legumes, efficient drainage system and soil bunding. Results: The paper found that the intensity of adoption of EBFMPs is significantly determined by the age of farmers, distance to farms, perception of soil fertility, knowledge of EBFMPs, number of extension visits and the type of irrigation scheme available to farmers. Conclusions: To promote sustainable agricultural production in Ghana and elsewhere in Africa using EBFMBs, these factors must be considered.

Abstract Weather extremes which are accelerated by changing climate greatly decrease agricultural productivity, resulting in severe economic losses and losses of livelihood of the poorest marginal communities. The adoption of stress-tolerant rice varieties (STRVs) is recommended as a best technology fix for risk adaptation. Although STRVs provide better outcomes with no yield penalty, farmers' decisions to adopt new STRVs are influenced by a multitude of factors, most importantly information exposure. We used a sequential logit model to analyze the impact of information access and information quality on adoption decisions regarding STRVs in flood-risk areas. Over the years, we found that STRVs adoption has become scale neutral, but adopters have significantly higher access to information. The estimates showed that 48 per cent of the farmers having access to information decided to adopt STRVs. When information reaches 50 per cent of the rice farmers in flood-prone areas, the estimated additional annual income is US$235 million.

Cocoa has been developed in various regions in Indonesia. In developing cocoa farming, farmers still face the problem of low productivity, efficiency and quality of seeds. This is partly due to not using the right fertilizer. This study aims to analyze the effect of NPK Lodrin fertilizer use on the efficiency and income of cocoa farming in Gorontalo. The study was conducted in several Gorontalo cocoa production centers, namely in Gorontalo District and Pohuwato District in 2016. Data collection was conducted by survey method with questionnaires or structured questionnaires for 59 cocoa farmers. Respondents were farmers who used Lodrin NPK fertilizer and farmers who did not use Lodrin NPK fertilizer. The selection of respondents was carried out by stratified random sampling technique. The farming efficiency analysis method uses the Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function model. Financial farming analysis was carried out to determine the level of cocoa farming income with the use of Lodrin NPK fertilizer. The results showed that the use of Lodrin NPK fertilizer significantly affected the increase in production, efficiency and income of cocoa farming in Gorontalo. The average level of farm efficiency both technical, allocative and economic efficiency of cocoa farmers using Lodrin NPK fertilizer is higher when compared to farmers who do not use Lodrin NPK fertilizer. The factors that influence the inefficiency of cocoa farming are farmer education and institutional factors, namely the frequency of counseling, participation in farmer groups, access to credit and technology assistance. The use of Lodrin NPK fertilizer increases the income of cocoa farming, as evidenced by the value of the R / C ratio and the value of return for higher production factors of farmers who use Lodrin NPK fertilizer.
