Factors Other than the Glomerular Filtration Rate That Determine the Serum Beta-2-Microglobulin Level

Abstract: Backgroundβ2-microglobulin has been increasingly investigated as a diagnostic marker of kidney function and a prognostic marker of adverse outcomes. To date, non-renal determinants of β2-microglobulin levels have not been well described. Non-renal determinants are important for the interpretation and appraisal of the diagnostic and prognostic value of any endogenous kidney function marker.MethodsThis cross-sectional analysis was performed within the framework of the www.seniorlabor.ch study, which includes sub… Show more

“…β2M has also been implicated in some non-renal, cardiovascular conditions suggesting its role in physiology is still being elucidated [44]. β2M is highly expressed on motor neurons and shown to play a role in the progression in a murine model of motor neuron disease [45].…”

“…B2M is associated with age, male gender, C-reactive protein (CRP), and white blood cell (WBC) count and is inversely related to systolic BP and cholesterol [28]. Elevated B2M in our large amputee group may be attributable to chronic inflammation.…”

“…At the same time, our equation had smaller bias than of that by Wong et al [12] and high precision in both the modeling and validation groups. In addition, β2-microglobulin levels are characterized by a non-specific increase with malignancy and inflammation [13], and can also be affected by age and gender [24]. BIA measurements are, however, not entirely free of these shortcomings, especially PA which may be related to changes in inflammatory mediators [25], and may be affected by age and sex [26] in hemodialysis population.…”
