Factors predicting double embryo implantation following double embryo transfer in assisted reproductive technology: implications for elective single embryo transfer

Abstract: Regardless of prognosis, patients aged <35 years with blastocyst-stage embryos and average prognosis patients from whom >10 oocytes were retrieved may be good candidates for eSET. Physicians may consider using these data to counsel patients on eSET, which would reduce multiple gestations and associated complications.

“…Steinberg et al (2013) found in a large retrospective study that the strongest predictors for live birth following SET were: transferring blastocysts compared with cleavage embryos, maternal age younger than 38 years, having >3 embryos available for cryopreservation and retrieving >10 oocytes. In another recent retrospective study, predictors for double embryo implantation were blastocyst transfer, retrieving >10 oocytes and age <35 years (Martin et al, 2016). Another smaller study showed that embryo quality and age are the strongest predictors of good outcomes (Hunault et al, 2002).…”

“…It is well known that maternal age is the most significant indicator for double embryo implantation following DET (Kim et al 2015;Martin et al 2016). Various studies have consistently shown that oocytes from women over 40 years of age have decreased quality (Alasmari et al 2016;Hourvitz et al 2009); subsequently, the resultant embryos will show declining developmental potentials (Marquez et al 2000).…”

“…Martin et al specified the strongest negative predictor of double embryo implantation was age ≥35 years compared to age <35 years after double embryo transfer (DET) (Martin et al 2016).…”

“…Age is a primary clinic criterion when considering a woman's candidacy for eSET. Martin et al (2016) specified the strongest negative predictor of double embryo implantation was age ≥35 years compared to age <35 years after double embryo transfer (DET). Kim et al (2015) reported maternal age ≤35 years was the cutoff value to predict twin pregnancy following DET.…”
