Falling Utilization Factor of Thermal Power Plants in India and Its Financial Impact

Abstract: Thermal power plants in India are operating under very low Utilization Factors. The average national Utilization Factor of coal based thermal power plants was 77.5 % % in 2009-10 which has come down to 53.37 % in 2021-22. Many studies and reports indicate that, in the business-as-usual situation, average Utilization Factor may drop to 40% in next 2-3 years.
