FASER and the Search for Light and Weakly Interacting Particles

Abstract: For decades, the leading examples of new physics targets at particle colliders were particles with TeV-scale masses and O(1) couplings to the standard model. More recently, however, there is a growing and complementary interest in new particles that are much lighter and more weakly coupled. I review the motivations for this shift and the importance of renormalizable portals. I then present FASER, a proposed LHC experiment that is specifically designed to discover light and weakly interacting particles, includi… Show more

“…• CERN's LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS will provide complementary information by searching for the elusive DM particle and hyperweak gauge interactions of light relics [33,612,1831,1832]. In addition, the ForwArd Search ExpeRiment (FASER) will search for light hyperweakly-interacting particles produced in the LHC's high-energy collisions in the far-forward region [1833][1834][1835].…”

“…To naturally suppress the couplings, new degrees of freedom (DOFs) are "sterile" (neutral) under the SM gauge interactions, or in other words, are SM gauge singlets. Although singlet under the SM gauge group, these particles could still interact with some "dark sector" or be charged under hidden 1 The terminology WILP is the analog [3] of weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP), in which a Z2 symmetry is typically further imposed. Similar names includes weakly-interacting slim particle (WISP) [4], light weakly coupled particle (WCP) [5], and feebly interacting particle (FIP) [6], addressing on axion and axion-like particle, light dark matter, and portal dark matter, etc.…”
