AV1 compression technology achieved superb efficiency over HEVC and VP9 by introducing advanced compression tools. With these new tools comes increased encoding complexity. On the other hand, real-time communication (RTC) applications require an encoder to operate with low latency, low bitrate, low encode time and often on low-end platforms. This makes usage of AV1 encoder in RTC tasks challenging. In this paper we discuss some of the techniques we used to make libaom AV1 encoder suitable for RTC applications: from encoding tool selection to reducing complexity of the existing encoding tools. By implementing these algorithms among others libaom AV1 encoder is now able to provide lowlatency real-time video encoding even on low-end mobile platforms in RTC applications.

As a next-generation video coding standard, AV1 introduces numerous new coding tools, leading to high computational complexity and high time cost. To deal with this problem, in this paper, we propose a decision tree based algorithm to early terminate the inter prediction process by predicting splitting decisions at each depth. Motion compensated block is introduced to provide temporal neighborhood information. Nine attributes are selected and analyzed in this paper, and a set of decision trees are generated for different block sizes. According to experimental results, our algorithm can save 23.6% of encoding time on average, with a negligible BD-rate loss of 0.73% under low-delay encoding mode.

This article presents an extensive review of the state-of-the-art system-level solutions featuring complexity reduction and/or dedicated hardware designs for the AV1 and VVC video coding formats. These formats introduced several novel coding techniques compared to their predecessors to improve the coding efficiency at the cost of a significant computational cost. In this article, we discuss the main novelties of AV1 and VVC in each coding module, including block partitioning, intra and inter prediction, transform, entropy coding, and in-loop filters. Then, we present the main published works focusing on complexity reduction and hardware designs for AV1 and VVC. Most of the complexity reduction solutions target the complex and flexible block partitioning structures of these encoders to provide a better tradeoff between coding efficiency and complexity reduction whereas the hardware designs focus on the challenge of implementing the new coding tools to attend real-time processing of high-definition videos. Even with the presented works reaching impressive results, these research fields remain opened for innovative contributions, as discussed in this article.
