Fast Monte Carlo dose calculation for photon beams based on the VMC electron algorithm

Abstract: A new Monte Carlo algorithm for 3D photon dose calculation in radiation therapy is presented, which is based on the previously developed Voxel Monte Carlo (VMC) for electron beams. The main result is that this new version of VMC (now called XVMC) is more efficient than EGS4/PRESTA photon dose calculation by a factor of 15-20. Therefore, a standard treatment plan for photons can be calculated by Monte Carlo in about 20 min. on a "normal" personal computer. The improvement is caused mainly by the fast electron t… Show more

“…The MC dose calculation algorithm in iPlan RT 4.1.2 TPS was based on the X‐ray Voxel Monte Carlo algorithm. ( 19 ) This algorithm consists of three main components: source modeling, beam collimating system modeling, and patient dose computation. Depending on the desired precision and calculation speed, there are two options for MLC modeling which are “accuracy optimized” and “speed optimized”.…”

“…Similar to the VSM, the TPFs are used instead of direct MC simulation to significantly reduce calculation times. Finally, x‐ray voxel Monte Carlo (XVMC)10 is used to calculate the dose in the patient model defined by the patient CT dataset.…”

“…The Monaco TPS currently has a clinical MC dose calculation algorithm called XVMC (12) for photons, which is founded on the voxel‐based MC algorithm (VMC) (13) for electron beams. The new GPUMCD algorithm is capable of modeling dose for both a standard linear accelerator and for an Elekta MRI linear accelerator where it can model magnetic field effects.…”
