Fat Injection to Correct Contour Deformities in the Reconstructed Breast

Abstract: Although fat injection in and around the reconstructed breast has limitations, such as fat necrosis and need for repeated injections, our experience indicates that overall it is a very safe technique that can improve or correct significant contour deformities that otherwise would require more complicated, riskier procedures to improve.

“…A review of the literature reveals there are a growing number of published reports on the use of fat grafting in breast reconstruction after surgery for breast cancer. While some of them are case reports (Del Vecchio 2009, Babovic 2010, Panettiere 2011, Fitoussi 2009), a considerable number describe their experience with 40 or more patients (Spear 2005, Serra-Renom 2010, Rietjens 2011, Losken 2011, Missana 2007, Delay 2008, Panettiere 2009, Kanchwala 2009). …”

“…Autologous fat transplantation (AFT) shows great potential in repairing soft tissue defects caused by trauma, tumor resection and congenital anomalies due to incisional scar-free and minimal complications (Spear et al 2005;Coleman and Saboeiro 2007). Furthermore, AFT has been considered as a promising alternative to artificial tissue implants Knippenberg et al 2005).…”
