Objective: The aim of our study is to show through experiments harming potential of blank firing guns, which are known to be harmless mistakenly. Materials and Methods:Two different types of blank firing guns were utilized to shot at chicken leg as a tissue simulant; at a distance of 0-5 cm. Results of the experiments were photographed and recorded in a digital platform.Contact shot at chicken leg caused full-thickness bone fracture and full-thickness tissue penetration. In contrast, correlation was not detected between dimensions of smoothing and tissue damage on the target. We think that the causes of results that have no correlation, as weather conditions, wind, temperature, defiency of blank cartridge guns.Results and Conclusion: The results we had, studies and case reports about this subject in literature exhibit obviously harming potential of blank firing guns for human body. No significant correlation was determined between damage, diameter of soot and shot range in 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 cm. A new research about the correlation between damage, diameter of soot and different close range of shot can be performed in another study.Keywords: Firearm; Gun Powder; Contact Shot; Bone Fracture; Blank Cartridge Gun Injuries; Handgun. ÖzetAmaç: Çalışmamızın amacı; toplumda zararsız olarak bilinen kuru sıkı silahların organik bir hedefe yapılan atışlar ile meydana getirebileceği yaralanma potansiyelinin deneysel olarak gösterilmesidir.Gereç ve Yöntem: Doku simulantı olarak tavuk eti but bölümü hedef olarak belirlenmiş ve iki farklı yapıda kuru sıkı tabanca ile 0-5 cm mesafeden atışlar yapılmıştır. Bulgular ölçülerek, fotoğraflanmış ve dijital ortamda kayıt edilmiştir.Kuru sıkı tabanca ile tavuk etine yapılan bitişik atış sonucu tam kat doku penetrasyonu ve kemik dokusunda tam kat kırık saptanmıştır. Ancak hedefte, atış mesafesi ile oluşan isin çapı ve doku hasarı ölçümleri bakımından korelasyon tespit edilememiştir. Elde ettiğimiz sonuçlarda anlamlı korelasyon olmamasında; hava koşulları, rüzgâr, ortam sıcak-lığı, kuru sıkı tabancaların konvansiyonel silahlar kadar verimli düze-neklerinin olmaması gibi sebeplerin etkili olabileceğini düşünmekteyiz. Bulgular ve Sonuç: Elde ettiğimiz sonuçlar ve konu ile ilgili literatürdeki çalışmalar, kuru sıkı silahların insan bedeninde yaralanmalara sebep olabileceğini açıkça ortaya koymaktadır. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 ve 5 cm atış mesafesi ile hasar ve is çapı arasında anlamlı korelasyon tespit edilmedi. Başka bir bilimsel çalışmada, farklı yakın atış mesafeleri ile hasar ve is çapı arasında korelasyon olup olmadığı değerlendirilebilir.

Hem dış görünüşleri hem de çıkardıkları ses ile gerçeğinden ayırt edilemeyen kuru sıkı silahların genelde savunma ve korkutma amacıyla satın alındıkları bilinmektedir. Ancak kuru sıkı silahların ölümlere yol açtığı ve sanıldığı kadar zararsız silahlar olmadığı sunduğumuz olgularla ortaya konmuştur. Çalışmamızda; kuru sıkı silah ile vücudunun farklı bölgelerinden, farklı atış mesafelerinden vurularak ölen ve otopsisi yapılan üç olgu değerlendirildi. Otopside her üç olguda da vücut içerisinden saçma tanesi çıkartıldı. Saçma tanesinin isabet ettiği bölgelerde iç kanama, iç organ yaralanması, beyin zarları arasına kanama ve beyin laserasyonu tespit edildi. Ölüme neden olmayan veya ölümle sonuçlanan kum sıkı silahlarla meydana gelen yaralanmalar zamanla artmaktadır. Kum sıkı silah alım-satımını ve serbestçe taşınmasının kısıtlanmasını düzenleyen yasalara gereksinim vardır. Ayrıca kum sıkı silahların tehlikeli ve zararlı olduğu konusunda toplumun eğitilmesi ve medyada ateşli silah kullanımını özendiren programların yayınlanmaması ve reklamlarda yer verilmemesi gereklidir.Anahtar kelimeler: Kum sıkı silah, ölüm, intihar, cinayet.

BackgroundBlank cartridge guns are generally regarded as being harmless and relative safe. However recent published articles demonstrated that the gas pressure from the exploding propellant of blank cartridge is powerful enough to penetrate the thoracic wall, abdominal muscle, small intestine and the skull. And there has been a limited number of case reports of ocular trauma associated with blank cartridge injury. In addition, no report on case with split extraocular muscle injury with traumatic cataract and penetrating corneoscleral wound associated with blank cartridge has been previously documented. This report describes the case of patient who sustained penetrating ocular injury with extraocular muscle injury by a close-distance blank cartridge that required surgical intervention.Case presentationA 20-year-old man sustained a penetrating globe injury in the right eye while cleaning a blank cartridge pistol. His uncorrected visual acuity at presentation was hand motion and he had a flame burn of his right upper and lower lid with multiple missile wounds. On slit-lamp examination, there was a 12-mm laceration of conjunctiva along the 9 o'clock position with two pinhole-like penetrating injuries of cornea and sclera. There was also a 3-mm corneal laceration between 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock and the exposed lateral rectus muscle was split. Severe Descemet's membrane folding with stromal edema was observed, and numerous yellow, powder-like foreign bodies were impacted in the cornea. Layered anterior chamber bleeding with traumatic cataract was also noted. Transverse view of ultrasonography showed hyperechoic foreign bodies with mild reduplication echoes and shadowing. However, a computed tomographic scan using thin section did not reveal a radiopaque foreign body within the right globe.ConclusionTo our best knowledge, this is the first case report of split extraocular muscle injury with traumatic cataract and penetrating ocular injury caused by blank cartridge injury. Intraocular foreign bodies undetectable by CT were identified by B-scan ultrasonography in our patient. This case highlights the importance of additional ultrasonography when evaluating severe ocular trauma. And ophthalmologists should consider the possibility of penetrating injury caused by blank ammunition.
