Fate of environmental pollutants

Abstract: This annual review covers the literature published in 2018 on topics related to the occurrence and fate of environmental pollutants in wastewater. Due to the vast amount of literature published on this topic, we have discussed only a portion of the quality research publications, due to the limitation of space. The abstract search was carried out using Web of Science, and the abstracts were selected based on their relevance. In a few cases, full‐text articles were referred to understand new findings better. “…Polyfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl, known by the abbreviation PFASs, are a family of emerging contaminants that have recently become a concern (Melzer et al 2010;Gallo et al 2012;Barry et al 2013;Vestergren and Cousins 2013;DeWitt 2015;Xiao 2017;Dong et al 2018;Lorenzo et al 2018;Brusseau 2019;Ng et al 2019;Klemes et al 2019;Pan et al 2020;Salthammer 2020). Perfluoroalkyl substances is a term used for a family of highly fluorinated chemicals (the term perfluorinated compounds can also be found in the literature).…”

“…Chemicals interfering with the endocrine system known as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are pollutants that typically occur in aquatic environments as a result of municipal wastewater discharge, landfill leachates, and agricultural and urban runoff [1]. EDCs are considered a major cause of aquatic wildlife decline and loss of biodiversity [2].…”

“…One of the greatest threats to global food security is the massive loss of staple crops to fungal disease (Dean et al, 2012;Fisher et al, 2012). To try to avoid devastating harvest losses, farmers apply increasing amounts of pesticides (Ng et al, 2019). As a result, synthetic pesticides are often found at high levels in soil and water, and accumulate in food webs with increasing toxicity (Damalas and Eleftherohorinos, 2011;Jorgensen et al, 2012;Silva et al, 2019).…”
