Fatty acids and triacylglycerols composition from Tunisian Acacia species seed oil

Abstract: Recently, plant seeds that have not been enough explored and exploited are cheap sources of a lot of natural molecules for industrial applications. The aim of the present study was to evaluate for the first time the composition of fatty acids and triacylglycerols (TAG) of mature unexploited seeds of some Acacia species (Acacia cyclops, Acacia ligulata and Acacia salicina) harvested in Tunisia in order to reveal their potential for human consumption. Results showed that, Acacia seed oils were mainly unsaturated … Show more

“…Lipid profile of the HM pools in different phases was evaluated embracing the mass/charge (m/z) ranging from 100 to 1200, in triplicate. For this, 50.0 mg of lipid from each HM pool extracted by Folch and creamatocrit methods and prepared according to Youzbachi et al 19 with modifications, were diluted in 950.0 μL of chloroform (Synth, São Paulo, Brazil). Subsequently, 5.0 μL of this solution was diluted with the addition of 1.0 mL of methanol/chloroform 9:1 (high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) grade, J.T.Baker ® , Radnor, USA).…”

“…Vegetable oil, margarine, nuts and whole-grain products are important sources of omega-6 FAs (C18:2, (n-6)), while seafood, canola oil, soybean, flaxseed and walnuts are rich in omega-3 FAs (C18:3, (n-3). The consumption of omega-3 FAs is recommended to improve immunity, brain function and human health [8][9][10]. Generally, the seeds are good sources of protein and carbohydrates due to their high oil content [11].…”

“…In addition, soybean oil was assessed to compare distinctive chemical profiles with those obtained for omega-3 supplements and to detect possible adulterations. The lipid materials were prepared based on Youzbachi et al 20 14 Therefore, ammonium formate was added to samples in order to form adducts and consequently prevailing the ionization via [TAG + NH 4 ] + so that the MS fingerprint reproducibility was not affected.…”
