Fault-Tolerant Virtual Backbone in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network

Abstract: To save energy and alleviate interferences in a wireless sensor network, the usage of virtual backbone was proposed. Because of accidental damages or energy depletion, it is desirable to construct a fault tolerant virtual backbone, which can be modeled as a k-connected m-fold dominating set (abbreviated as (is adjacent with at least m nodes in C and the subgraph of G induced by C is k-connected. In this paper, we present an approximation algorithm for the minimum (3, m)-CDS problem with m ≥ 3. The performance … Show more

“…The coverage model describes how well the sensor nodes can monitor the events in the sensing region [22]. In WSN, the unit disk model is generally used to define the sensing zone of a sensor [23]. In the present work, the binary detection model is chosen as the coverage model.…”

“…Therefore, fault-tolerance enables VB to provide its specified service during a link or a node failure. Thus, fault-tolerance becomes one of the most significant research problems [ 36 ]. As the size of WSNs increases, the probability of sensor nodes failure and traffic overhead increase.…”

“…This system only saves WSN from its failure, but do not provide the efficient mechanism. J. Zhou, et al [27], CDS (Connected dominating set) is proposed to serve as backbone of WSN, because there might be failure in sensor node due to various reasons. So, it is essential to design a fault tolerant along with the high redundancy in connectivity as well as coverage.…”
