Fault tree analysis and prevention strategies for gas explosion in underground coal mines of Pakistan

Abstract: Purpose. Gas explosion in the underground coal mines of Pakistan is the main source of coal miners' mortalities. The purpose of this article is to analyze the main causes of gas explosion in the underground coal mines of Pakistan.Methods. The study employs the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) to understand the key root causes that lead to system failure. Particularly, this research has articulated the fault tree model in case of gas explosion in underground coal mines to analyze the root causes of this dangerous acci… Show more

“…In the process of deciding on an ECM selection, each alternative was evaluated by examining the literature review (Kissell et al 2007 ; Lirong et al 2011 ; Mahdevari et al 2014 ; Wang et al 2014 ; Shahani et al 2019 ; Ray et al 2022 ; Zhang et al 2022 ), preventive legislations and reports (NIOSH 2006 ; ILO 2009 ; CTEA 2021 ), and expert team opinion. The alternatives suggested in respect of these considerations were listed as follows: ECM 1 : High mining technology ECM 2 : Financial investment ECM 3 : Application of constructive measures ECM 4 : Improving safety technology …”

“…Coal and gas outburst refers to the phenomenon in which there is a sudden outburst of coal and gas from inside the coal wall to the mining face in a short period of time, causing immeasurable casualties and serious losses. The causes of coal and gas outburst are mainly the result of ground pressure, tectonic stress and mine pressure, gas content and gas pressure, and the physical and mechanical properties of rock and coal [15]. Many researchers have utilized new methods to study the mining methods targeting coal and gas outburst in coal seams.…”
