This paper presents a quantitative risk assessment method to predict the potential risks of liquid ammonia tanks. The method combines probabilistic prediction and consequence assessment: the former is predicted by Bayesian networks derived from bow‐tie mapping, in which the conditional probabilities are determined by analytic hierarchy process, the latter is calculated based on numerical simulation of accident consequences and Probit probability model. The application results show that the method can be used for quantitative risk assessment of liquid ammonia storage tank, and the Bayesian network model is efficient and stable, which can realize risk prediction, accident causes analysis and risk mitigation analysis. Human errors during production or maintenance and corrosion are the main causes of liquid ammonia leakage. Toxicity has the greatest effect on the risk of liquid ammonia tanks. Risk mitigation measures can significantly reduce individual risk and societal risk. The obtained results provide meaningful guidance for the prevention and risk mitigation strategies of liquid ammonia leakage accidents, so as to improve the safety level of liquid ammonia during storage.

Several industries like cold storage and ice plants heavily rely on ammonia (NH3) due to its low cost, excellent thermophysical traits, and zero effects on the ozone layer. Despite its widespread use as a refrigerant, the hazardous nature of ammonia remains a significant health concern. Since the industrial revolution, ammonia leakage has led to numerous major accidents, including fire and vapor cloud explosions. This paper reviews the safety issues and the current practices of risk assessment with regard to the industrial ammonia used in refrigeration systems. In addition, previous works related to the risk analysis of ammonia-based industries are reviewed. The majority of ammonia refrigeration system-related works applied the traditional static tools for risk analysis such as fault tree, event tree, and bow-tie that are not suitable to handle common causes of failures or conditional dependencies, which are absolutely significant aspects for a reliable safety assessment. Thus, it is vital to maintain and improve the safety levels of diverse industries using ammonia-based refrigeration systems. Various characteristics of ammonia-based refrigeration systems and their safety issues related to industry, present development, and future trends are comprehensively underscored. This review may act as a guide to develop a better understanding of dealing effectively with the hazards of ammonia-based refrigeration systems and risk assessment, thus enhancing the overall safety of humans and the environment.

Risk management plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of tunnel construction by considering various factors, including uncertainties associated with concurrent adverse sources. One key aspect of risk management is prioritizing hazardous zones to devise an optimal countermeasure plan within time and cost constraints. This study developed an advanced tunnel risk management model, combining the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy set theory (FST). The model derived the impact using AHP and the probability using FST. By selectively combining causal factors that met the selection criterion, the risk of each hazardous zone was determined, enabling the prioritization of identified hazardous zones. The model application results indicated that causal combinations associated with significant tunnel convergence posed a relatively high risk. Moreover, the hazardous zones where unstable ground formations were excavated by a gripper tunnel boring machine (TBM) were revealed as the most vulnerable locations. Consequently, adopting a shield TBM or implementing ground reinforcement is recommended. Overall, the developed model effectively prioritizes identified hazardous zones and provides an optimal countermeasure plan, contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of the operations.
