Favourable effect of regular intake of fermented milk containing Lactobacillus johnsonii on Helicobacter pylori associated gastritis

Abstract: SUMMARYBackground: Lactobacillus johnsonii (Lj1) had an in vitro and in vivo inhibitory effect on Helicobacter pylori. Fermented milk containing Lj1 (LC 1 ), coadministered with antibiotics had a favourable effect on H. pylori gastritis. Aim: Evaluate the effect of LC 1 intake without antibiotics on H. pylori gastritis. Methods: Fifty H. pylori positive healthy volunteers were randomised in a double-blind study to LC 1 or placebo. Gastric biopsies from the antrum and corpus were obtained before, and after 3 an… Show more

“…The effect is long lasting compared with the relatively short effect of antibiotics [Pantoflickova et al 2003] and this may be due to its impact on the gut barriers and immunity [Vitini et al 2000]. In addition, it is associated with higher eradication rate [Manfredi et al 2012] and probably low recurrence rates.…”

“…The effect of an La1-acidified milk (LC-1) administration was studied in 50 H. pylori-positive healthy volunteers who did not receive any antibiotic treatment in a randomized, controlled, double-blind study; the histology and H. pylori density from gastric biopsies obtained before and after 3 and 16 weeks of treatment were evaluated. 50 LC1 decreased the severity and activity of the gastritis (P ¼ 0.04) as well as the density of H. pylori colonization. Interestingly, the thickness of the mucus layer increased during LC1 consumption.…”

“…johnsonii LC1 disminuyó la densidad de H. pylori en pacientes infectados al administrarse durante cuatro meses en leche fermentada y sin emplear antibióticos (Pantoflickova et al, 2003). Otro producto comercial con L. johnsonii LA1 logró interferir en la colonización gástrica por H. pylori aunque no se logró erradicar (Obregón et al, 2003).…”
