Fe/Mn Multilayer Nanowires as High-Performance T1-T2 Dual Modal MRI Contrast Agents

Abstract: A lot of nanomaterials are using T1-T2 dual mode magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agents (CAs), but multilayer nanowire (NW) with iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) as T1-T2 dual modal CAs has not been reported yet. Herein, we synthesized a Fe/Mn multilayer NW with an adjustable Fe layer, as T1-T2 dual-mode CAs. The relaxation performance of Fe/Mn multilayer NW was studied at 1.5 T. Results show that, when the length of the Fe layer is about 10 nm and the Mn is about 5 nm, the r1 value (21.8 mM−1s−1) and r2 value (7… Show more

“…9A and B). 179 When the length of the Fe layer was about 10 nm and the length of the Mn layer was about 5 nm, the Fe/Mn multilayer nanowire showed the best imaging ability of T 1 – T 2 dual-mode MRI. However, the biosafety and efficiency of the multilayer nanowire had not been evaluated by systematic in vivo biodistribution and pharmacokinetics experiments.…”

“…It can be used for cardiac imaging, surgery, intervention therapy, joint observation, tumor diagnosis, vascular display, and stroke symptoms. The researcher anticipates that their hybrid materials (Fe/Mn multilayer) NW will soon be employed as T1-T2 dual-mode MRI CAs [ 173 ]. They use the electrochemical deposition synthesis method for the single component Fe and Mn NWs, and Fe/Mn multilayer NWs in the homemade anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates [ 174 , 175 ].…”

“…Their highly sensitive, label-free detection capabilities make it possible to precisely quantify biomarkers for the early diagnosis of disease [ 69 ]. Iron oxide nanowires are used as MRI contrast agents to enable noninvasive imaging [ 70 ]. Through integration with proteins, fluorophores, and quantum dots, nanowires can perform photoacoustic-guided surgical resection of tumors [ 71 ].…”

“…The transformation from Hb to HbO 2 leads to the reduction of the transverse relaxation rate (r 2 ) contributing to the high signal intensity of the tumor tissues present in T 2 -weighted images. 93,94 Thus, MnO 2 proves to be an efficient oxygen producer and serves as a viable dual T 1 -T 2 contrast agent for MRI.…”
