Fear responses and postmortem muscle characteristics of turkeys of two genetic lines

Abstract: Commercial turkey production has increased greatly in recent decades. Along with increased production, problems with turkey meat quality have also increased. Research with other species has demonstrated that differences in meat quality exist among pigs and cattle differing in characteristics such as fearfulness. However, associations between fear responses and postmortem (PM) muscle characteristics related to the meat quality of turkeys have not been examined. This study evaluated the test-retest repeatability… Show more

“…Early life experiences may influence interactions with the environment and lead to a varied response in health, welfare, and productivity ( 25 ). Stress can be physical, chemical, or physiological in nature ( 26 ) and individual animals differ in their reactivity to stress and fearfulness ( 27 ). Therefore, it may be hypothesized that birds which have difficulty maintaining homeostasis may be at greater risk for disease contraction and production losses.…”

“…Among the meat species of poultry, turkey has special place. By its biological and economic characteristics -this is one of the most promising types of poultry [6][7][8][9]. The biological diversity of poultry by form of breeds, populations, lines is a necessary factor in improving existing and creating new breeding forms [10][11][12][13].…”

“…Simultaneously, the interest of consumers in alternative poultry production systems (outdoor, free range, ecological) prompts the producers to search for novel genetic groups of these birds, often with a medium-fast growth rate, including crosses of slow-growing turkeys (label type) and fastgrowing commercial lines. Sparse investigations comparing the behavioral traits of fast-and slow-growing lines of turkey indicate that they differ in the vulnerability to both long-term and short-term stress (Huff et al, 2007;Ilori et al, 2011;Erasmus et al, 2015). It seems appropriate, therefore, to investigate the model of the physiological response to stress in various populations of turkeys and to elucidate principles of inheritance of the analyzed parameters.…”
