Feasibility of trunk diameter fluctuations in the scheduling of regulated deficit irrigation for table olive trees without reference trees

Abstract: PreprintRegulated deficit irrigation (RDI) results are affected by the actual water stress level reached during the treatments. The irrigation scheduling based on water status measurements, such as trunk diameter fluctuations, can control in an accurate way the water restrictions. However, the number of works that use these indicators as isolate parameter to control the schedule is scarce in general, and very scarce in olive trees. Building on previous works, the aim of this article is to schedule an RDI strat… Show more

“…Other companies, such as the Spanish Verdtech (www.verdtech.es) and the Israeli Phytech (www.phytech.com), have developed automatic monitoring systems of SDV records. Examples of different approaches to scheduling different irrigation strategies from SDV records have been recently published for olive [141][142][143][144]), nectarine [121] and peach [145,146], among other species. These publications, together with that by Fernández [20], describe well the potential and limitations of the use of SDV records for irrigation scheduling.…”

“…Irrigation has been traditionally used for agricultural crops. Intensively managed olive orchards expanded in the last two decades increasing the development of irrigation strategies balancing water saving, tree vigour and olive oil production (Fernandez et al, 2013;Girón et al, 2015). In the case of forests, there is experimental evidence of increased stem diameter growth in response to irrigation (Mayor & Rodà, 1994), particularly when groundwater is not within the reach of roots .…”
