Feasibility study on thermo‐mechanical performance of 3D printed and annealed coir fiber powder/polylactic acid eco‐friendly biocomposites

Brailson Mansingh Bright,

Shukur Abu Hassan
et al.

Abstract: The enhancement of the mechanical and thermal characteristics of 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) composites reinforced by coir fiber powder (CFP) has been investigated by varying the weight percentage (wt%) of the reinforcement and annealing process. CFP/PLA composite filaments with CFP compositions of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% were fabricated. These filaments were used to print CFP/PLA test specimens. The specimens were annealed at 90°C for 120 min in a hot air oven followed by cooling at room temperature. Mecha… Show more

“…An analysis using the Taguchi technique produced an impact strength of 38.54 kJ/m 2 , 1.39 per cent higher than the experimental design, with optimal parameters including 100 per cent infill density, 45/−45° raster angle, 0.25 mm layer height, and 75 mm/s print speed. To confirm the effectiveness of the improved parameters, validation trials were used [11,15]. Tensile and flexural strength first rises and subsequently falls with rising bed temperature.…”

“…Using 3-D-printed PLA/Sisal layers could enhance the hybrid composite's mechanical and thermal qualities. Careful handling is necessary when using Sisal/PLA 3-Dprinted PLA layers in the 3-D printing process to create a hybrid composite [11,12,15]. It was imperative to modify the printing temperature, layer height, and infill density to ensure adequate connectivity between the PLA and sisal fibres.…”

“…For example, PLA-related composites could be prepared by various technologies, such as extrusion, injection molding, film drawing, 3D printing, etc. The preparation of SFRTPCs has mainly focused on the 3D printing method, represented by fused deposition modeling, in which complex structures can be fabricated with a layer-by-layer buildup process [ 21 , 22 ]. Meanwhile, other preparation technologies have also been investigated by researchers.…”
